Chapter 1 to me was an interesting chapter. I didn't realize how much media affected our lives and how immersed into our culture it was. Learning that the internet really took off for the news business after the September 11th attacks was news to me, I just thought that the internet was always around and everyone used it as a news source, but that was found to be untrue because only 12% used it as a news source compared to after the attack when it jumped to 40%.
When they talked about models of communication, i knew about the tansmission model because that is what was always taught. When i reviewd the cultural model i found it interesting that this model sees the communication as the construction of a shared space or map of meaning in which people coexist. It was hard to wrap my head around the fact that the message, like the transmission model, isn't isolated but rather the cultural model says that we already exist in a world of shared meaning.
Overall, i thought it was a good chapter that made me look further into the media and communicative meanings than just what i was taking for granted.
